I’ve realized that in my year I will meet a lot of new people, and be missing a lot of old. Both will most likely be referenced, and it’s a waste of my time (and yours) to explain my relationship with everyone I mention here. So this page is where everyone is explained. I’ll add people as I reference them, and if you have requests of people you’d like to see here please comment on the pertinent post. I going to go ahead and assume my parents are self-explanatory.
Phill – my younger bro. He is a freshman at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business (in the honors program).
Sarah – Phill’s girlfriend of forever who I love. She goes to Scripps now.
Jim/James – aka “Daddy Longlegs”, “the tall one” or “el grande”. A man of many names, he is my roommate back at Macalester.
Maeve – my very good friend and Jim’s girlfriend. We met through Mac’s Mock Trial team, and she is now pursuing her doctorate in American history at Cornell University. And she has an iron will.
Dennis - my Global Positioning System, named after my first-year roommate’s boyfriend. He is a geography major.
Chili - my car. A red 2003 Volkswagen two-door GTI hatchback. Named Chili since it’s red like a Chili pepper.
Ryan – One of my housemates in Cape Town. He goes to Macalester as well, but is a year above me so we didn’t know each other in Saint Paul.
Vicki – another housemate, from Brooklyn. She is here for a year and Natalie’s constant companion.
Natalie – also a housemate, also from Brooklyn. She is here for a year and Vicki’s constant companion.
Brittany – the fourth housemate, a Political Science major from Western Michigan.
Robby – the fifth housemate, an American expatriate who recently enrolled as a full-time UCT student. He knows the area, so he shows us around.
Prof. Harry – my Political Economy professor at the University of Cape Town. He’s really hilarious and Bush-bashes pretty much daily.
Samatar – Dr. Ahmed I. Samatar, my academic advisor at Macalester, professor of the January Maastricht seminar, and occasional self-appointed strict surrogate father. He is a proud Somali-American, the dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship, and a firm believer in structure.
Mishal, Yan, Kristia, Jamie, Fed, Lelde, Zaina, and Helinna – my fellow Maastricht-ers. All Macalester students, we live, study, and write together. We’ll probably have some fun too.
Nathalie – One of my program coordinators who works for the Center for European Studies. She has a baby daughter, Indigo, and an American husband, Atticus. They live close to us, and we love her / them.
